2026 Toyota RAV4 Tyre Size: Every Variant Explained

The new 2026 Toyota RAV4 uses 235/65R17 tyres on the GX, 235/60R18 on the GXL and 235/50R20 on the XSE hybrid and Cruiser. Learn what the numbers mean and how to choose replacements for comfort, wet grip and efficiency.

The new 2026 Toyota RAV4 rolls on 235/65R17 tyres in GX form, 235/60R18 on the GXL, and 235/50R20 on the XSE hybrid and Cruiser. All three sizes share a 235-millimetre width, so the change from grade to grade is really about wheel diameter and sidewall height.

The sixth-generation RAV4 arrived in Australian showrooms in early 2026, and every version is now electrified, with hybrid power across the range and a plug-in hybrid joining the line-up. This guide sets out the factory tyre sizes we could confirm, explains how to read them, and helps you choose replacements that keep your RAV4 comfortable, safe in the wet and easy on fuel.

Factory tyre sizes for the 2026 Toyota RAV4

Here are the sizes for each grade we were able to confirm. For any grade marked "check your tyre placard", read the label on the driver's door jamb before you order.

The Edge and the plug-in hybrid grades use their own wheel packages, so their sizes can differ from the grades above. Optional wheels or accessories can also change the size on your car. The placard and the sidewall of the tyres currently fitted are always the final word.

How to read your RAV4 tyre size

Take 235/65R17 as an example. The 235 is the width of the tyre in millimetres across its widest point. The 65 is the aspect ratio, meaning the sidewall is 65 per cent as tall as the tyre is wide, or a little over 150 millimetres. R means radial construction, which almost every modern car tyre uses, and 17 is the wheel diameter in inches.

As the wheels get bigger through the range, the sidewall gets shorter. A 235/50R20 has a sidewall of under 120 millimetres, which sharpens steering response and looks sportier but gives the tyre less cushion over potholes and sharp edges. Toyota balances wheel size and sidewall height so the overall diameter stays close across these grades, keeping the speedometer and safety systems accurate.

Following the size is the service description: a number for the load index and a letter for the speed rating. Some tyres also carry XL, short for extra load, meaning the tyre is reinforced to carry more weight at a higher pressure.

Choosing replacement tyres for your RAV4

Start with the size on your placard. Keeping the factory size protects ride comfort, handling and the accuracy of the car's driver-assist systems.

Next, check the load index and speed rating. Your new tyres should match or beat what the placard lists. A higher figure is fine; a lower one is not, and it can affect your insurance and roadworthiness.

Then think about what matters most for your driving. For a family SUV like the RAV4, three things usually top the list:

  • Comfort and quiet: a touring or highway pattern with a refined tread design keeps road noise down on coarse-chip country roads and long motorway runs.
  • Wet grip: Australian downpours arrive fast. Look for a tread with deep channels to clear water, and check the wet grip grade where an EU label is shown.
  • Efficiency: low rolling resistance helps a hybrid get the most out of every tank, and it matters even more on the heavier 20-inch packages.

For GX owners, the Landspider CityTraxx H/T is a comfortable highway choice in 235/65R17. GXL drivers can browse 235/60R18 tyres, where the Kumho Crugen Premium KL33 and the Praxent Patheris PT7 both suit everyday SUV duty. On the 20-inch grades, the Grenlander X-Sporter EV is designed with electrified vehicles in mind and comes in 235/50R20. Each listing shows its load index and speed rating, so compare them with your placard before you order. Our tyre guide explains tread patterns and labels in more detail.

Once the new set is on, look after it. Check pressures monthly when the tyres are cold, using the figures on the placard rather than the maximum moulded into the sidewall. Rotating front to rear at each service evens out wear, which matters on a hybrid SUV where the front tyres do most of the steering and braking work around town.

Thinking of bigger wheels? A word of caution

Swapping a GX or GXL onto 20-inch wheels is a common way to make a RAV4 look like the top grades, but it is not a free upgrade.

  • Ride quality: lower-profile tyres transmit more of the road into the cabin and are more prone to damage from potholes and kerbs.
  • Accuracy: if the new combination changes the overall diameter, the speedometer and safety systems such as stability control work from slightly wrong information.
  • Clearance and approval: wider or taller tyres can rub, and changes beyond the sizes Toyota lists for your car may need approval in your state. Tell your insurer about any change.
  • Running costs: larger, heavier wheel and tyre packages usually cost more to replace and can trim the hybrid's fuel economy.

If you are unsure, sticking with the size on your placard is the simplest path. When your new tyres arrive, a local workshop or mobile fitter near you can fit and balance them. Use our find a fitter page to see who is near you.

Common questions

Does every 2026 RAV4 use the same tyre size?

No. The GX uses 235/65R17, the GXL uses 235/60R18, and the XSE hybrid and Cruiser use 235/50R20. Check your placard for the Edge and plug-in hybrid grades.

Can I fit 18-inch tyres to a GX?

Only if you also change to 18-inch wheels that suit the RAV4. A 235/60R18 tyre will not fit the GX's factory 17-inch rims.

Do hybrid RAV4s need special tyres?

No special type is required, but a low rolling resistance tyre helps you get the most out of the hybrid system's efficiency.

Where do I find my RAV4's exact tyre size?

Check the tyre placard on the driver's door jamb or read the size on the sidewall of the tyres currently fitted.
