The Michelin Latitude X-ICE North 2 studded tires are designed for use in the harshest conditions with heavy snow and ice. The new model for all-wheel drive vehicles is based on the proven Michelin X-ICE North 2 winter tire for passenger cars.
Unlike the passenger car version, the new model for SUVs features a reinforced carcass for increased durability. Several wide-profile sizes now feature a 7-rib pattern instead of a 5-rib pattern. The Michelin Latitude X-ICE North 2 winter tire has also significantly expanded its range, now offering 26 sizes from 15 to 21 inches. Combined with the previous model, this tire covers the needs of virtually all SUVs.
Engineers also focused on safety on ice, equipping the new Michelin Latitude X-ICE North 2 with taller studs. The tread can contain between ten and fourteen rows of studs, depending on the tire size. While the number of studs has been reduced by 5%, this has improved traction and, per revolution, reduced braking distances on ice by almost 6%. The reduction in stud count is due to new standards that will come into effect in Scandinavia in 2013. These regulations clearly stipulate that each meter of tire circumference must contain no more than 50 studs.
The use of innovative Full Active Tread technology has increased the number of three-dimensional sipes by 6% and increased the working edge length by 64%. All these advantages allowed the Michelin Latitude X-ICE North 2 winter tires to increase acceleration dynamics on snow by more than 15%.
